I cannot overstate how strongly I would recommend Andrew as a flight instructor. Learning to fly an airplane has been the realization of a childhood dream for me, and I am extremely lucky to have had Andrew as a guide on this journey. Andrew is an incredibly gifted pilot, but even more than that, he is an unbelievable instructor. As I progressed through my training with him, he always knew exactly how to provide me just what I needed to succeed, whether that was instruction or encouragement, or just advice. He is meticulous about his instruction both on the ground and in the air, and he never shies away from a question. He always has a useful analogy ballet with the airplane or snowplowing come to mind to help clear up some of the complicated concepts that one needs to know in order to fly. He always knew exactly what mistakes I was likely to make, and always helped me learn from them without compromising safety, of course. Andrew is also exceptionally talented at tailoring instruction to any students learning style. He is incredibly passionate about both flying and teaching, and that really comes through in his lessons. I feel totally prepared to continue on in the world of general aviation. Thanks Andrew for setting me off on a lifelong journey of learning.
When I decided to buy a Skywagon, if figured my Super Decathalon experience was sufficient qualification for the upgrade. Not. Hardly. I learned from my time flying with Andrew that the Skywagon demands thorough understanding of energy management, respect for its awesome power, and a certain degree of humility. After our first day flying together, I concluded: “The most confident Skywagon pilot is someone who has never flown one.” Im a retired flight test engineer and graduate of the USAF Test Pilot School. I recently returned to private flying after a 20-year break. In the fourteen months since my return, Ive logged 250 hours and completed that tailwheel endorsement. I did what I now call “Skywagon immersion training” with Andrew over three glorious days in the beautiful Dominican Republic. Andrew quickly assessed my skill level and then crafted the training to meet my needs. He introduced a continual series of challenges, guiding me through 85 landings at seven different airfields from sea level to density altitudes above 5,000 feet. After a period of “making friends” with the airplane, we did 3-point landings, progressed to 2-wheel, and then went looking for crosswinds to practice 1-wheel landings. Now, I thought I had already mastered these skills with my tailwheel endorsement in the Super Decathlon, but learning them at a whole new level with Andrew in his Skywagon was like going from black-and-white to High-Definition-Technicolor-Virtual-Reality on steroids. Andrew anticipated my mistakes and provided continuous commentary and/or control inputs to cement my learning of good Skywagon habits (and weed out the bad ones). As soon as I began to get comfortable with a particular technique, Andrew cranked up the difficulty level and directed me to a different airport for a new set of challenges. Words cant describe the stunning Dominican land- and seascapes, while our snapshots don’t do them justice either. It was if I was learning in some aviation theme park dreamworld. I can’t overstate the value of Andrews depth of knowledge, patient instructional technique, and his his steady stream of helpful admonitions. I will always and forever hear Andrews voice in my headsets: “bicycle, bicycle, bicycle” ... “roll with the rudder” ... “snowplow to the numbers” ... and “if you can see the runway, you’re going to bounce.” Whether its your first time in the Skywagon, or you’re looking to polish your skills, I wholeheartedly recommend Andrew to anyone aspiring to master this amazing aircraft. I, for one, will be going back for more.
